A year in the PR World

December 10, 2009

As the year is drawing to a close, PR Week has summed up what has been a tumultuous year in PR-land. In a month-by-month breakdown, they’ve highlighted highs and lows within the media and PR industry, covering everything from companies that have had to make job cuts to Nick Griffin being made an MEP [shock!]

They’ve also stuck a ‘reputometer’ at the end of the piece – charting who’s risen in our expectations and who’s lingering at the bottom. I have to add my two cents in here though – in the ‘Hot’ section of the reputometer, they haven’t included the rise and rise of Cheryl Cole…surely this year she’s dominated headlines once again? All in all it’s a great round up and it makes you wonder how so much has happened in such a short space of time, with a lot of it being so negative…

Roll on the next 12 months!

The first X Factor suicide?

June 30, 2009

It’s nearly that time of year again, when we all start casually cancelling our weekend plans, and staying in, rather than going out as YES, X Factor time will soon be upon us!!  (I realise that maybe it’s just me who cancels their plans….loser.)

However, this one story troubled me and I thought I should share it with you:

“An X Factor contestant has reportedly threatened to kill herself after failing an audition for the show.”

Dear. Lord. Apparently, after getting four no’s from the judges, the woman in her 50s ran out screaming she was going to ‘kill herself’. Producers were reportedly still with the woman an hour and a half after she made the threat, making sure she was ok.

Now don’t get me wrong, but I didn’t realise something like the X Factor could cause someone that much stress! I know you get your regular sob stories, and I’m not afraid to admit I get sucked in by them too – in fact, I love them. Even more worryingly, after the SuBo fiasco, this is the first year that the show’s producers have decided to have a doctor at the auditions, ‘just in case’.

I can see that shows like this are ‘make or break’ for someone, if it’s their dream. But suicide – seriously??

Are the celebs still in demand?

An article in this week’s Media Guardian “The New Seriousness” sparks an interesting discussion around whether there has been a decrease in demand of the traditional gossip and celebrity magazines over the past few years. This is difficult to believe considering the papers this week have been dominated by celebrities like Victoria Beckham, Jade Goody and Cheryl Cole… So do we still enjoy a good piece of celebrity gossip or are we losing interest in Posh’s new crop? I know I still enjoy reading about the latest scandal or radical haircut but am I on my own here?
